Thanksgiving With Dogs The Do’s & Don’ts

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and enjoy a feast with family and friends. Regardless if they have 2 or 4 legs! Although, not everything from your delicious meal is safe for your furry friend. Some foods can be downright dangerous for dogs. New smells, new people, and large gatherings can often add extra stress and anxiety for your pup. Here are some tips to keep them calm and safe on Turkey Day.

Do:

Give your dog a small kitty-plate

Can you cook a delicious feast for your family and not feel guilty about excluding our pets? Yes! You can include them. Here is a list of foods you can feel confident feeding your pooch while embracing them in the celebration.

  • Melons & Berries
  • Eggs
  • Peanut Butter
  • Cheese (small amount)
  • Green Beans & Carrots
  • Chicken & Turkey (plain, no seasoning or spices)
  • Pumpkin (no sugar added, not in pie form)

Don’t:

Go overboard with the turkey

Pets can eat turkey, under certain conditions. A small amount of unseasoned turkey without the skin is something most pups can digest.  But only if you know turkey agrees with your pet’s digestive system.

Do:

A small serving of cranberry sauce

Cranberries are full of antioxidants and vitamins, which are great for any dog. But this Thanksgiving staple is also full of sugar, so keep your pup’s portion light.

Don’t:

Let your dog near onions

Onions can cause anemia in dogs, which is very toxic to pups. To avoid any trips to the vet on Turkey Day, keep your pets away from any foods that contain onions, garlic, leeks, and shallots. This means no stuffing!

DO

Ask your guests (or relatives) not to sneak your dog food from the table.

You’ve already made plenty of Thanksgiving appropriate foods and set up a kitty plate for your furry friend. No matter how much she begs, let’s not go overboard.

Don’t:

Leave the trash can open

Open trash cans are an easy target for your dog to get into trouble. Thanksgiving trash can often contains onions, bones, turkey skin, and other harmful edibles. Even small dogs can knock an open trash can and get themselves into trouble quickly. Before you sit down to eat, dispose of all the trash or place the trash in a separate room so they don’t paw at it throughout your meal.
